Abscesses: (Infectious)

Cause:
Bacterial Infection

Symptoms:
Under the skin, around the neck, cheeks and dewlap, enlargements (pus sacks).

Treatment:
Clip the fur around the enlargements (pus sacks). Lance abscess and squeeze out the pus onto a paper to be burned. Swab out with peroxide/a disinfectant and apply an antibiotic ointment.

Rabbits will occassionally have abscesses. They are caused by bacterial infections under the skin where conditions are ideal for germs to develop. Regular use of a disinfectant will reduce their numbers.

Always make an incision across the lower surface of the abscess after clipping fur around the swelling. To allow for drainage and it makes it easier to squeeze out pus from the infection.

Destroy the pus by burning, as it is a source for infection to other rabbits. Swab out the abscess with peroxide and always disinfect the rabbits cage.
