Fur Chewing
Cause:
Lack of magnesium in diet, buck teeth, improper diet, excess dampness or upset and nervous rabbits
Symptoms:
Hair pulled out over any part of the body, or on the forehead of litter mates.
Treatment:
Use a feed ration that contains magnesium oxide in it. Check your rabbits for buck teeth, and give hay or roughage in their diet. Keep their environment free from sudden or unusual disturbances, and keep the rabbitry dry.
Fur chewing in rabbits can be frustrating as well as a costly problem. Not only does it take away from your rabbits appearance, but it makes it worthless as a pelt. Meat processors don't pay premium prices on fur chewed rabbits, and laboratories will not buy rabbits with this condition. When showing this condition, breeding stock can not be sold.
There are several circumstances that tend to bring this problem on, even though the exact causes are unknown.
