Heat Prostration

Cause:
Improper ventilation in extreme high temperatures and humidity, usually above 90 degrees F.

Symptoms:
Animal prostate (lying face down on the cage floor), rapid breathing, with a blood tinged fluid emerging from nostrils and mouth.

Treatment:
Reduce inside and outside temperature by moving AIR with fans and using water sprays or foggers on roof. Immerse animal in lukewarm water, place a wet burlap bag or towel on cage floor, use ice chips around the body, place on ground floor or any method that will lower body temperature.

Heat prostration or exhaustion is caused by high temperature in the environment. Good ventilation, housing and protection (fans, sprayers or foggers) are the best insurance in preventing this problem.

Death is very high, especially with pregnant does, if individuals are not treated immediately. Young in the nest box should alwasy be checked, as those with too much fur or bedding are also susceptible.

Animals suffering from exhaustion should be immersed in luke warm water up to their neck or wrapped in a wet burlap bag/towel with chips of ice placed around them. Keep them in a cooler place or on an earthen floor until recovered. ALL efforts must be made to lower the body temperature if recovery is to be expected.
