Long Toe Nails

Cause:
Toe nails not wearing due to hutch confinement

Symptoms:
Extra long nails, making it unusually difficult for the rabbits movements

Treatment:
With side cutting pliers or dog toenail clippers, trim nails

Because domestic rabbits are mainly housed in cages, they tend to develop extra long toe nails. Since the toenails do not have a chance to wear off normally, due to the cages, as the animal grows older the toe nails may become extra long.

Long toe nails can interfere with the normal use of the feet. They can catch on the all wire cage flooring, usually breaking off which causes bleeding and tenderness. It's a good management idea, to occasionally trim extra long toe nails, and make your rabbits a lot more comfortable.
