Mange

Cause:
Mite (parasitic)

Symptoms:
Rabbit scratches frequently, skin scabs or flakes appear in affected area. There will be hair loss around the head, shoulders and back of the neck, which will spread to other parts of the body.

Treatment:
Completely clip all the remaining fur on the infected area, and treat with an animal dust or mange lotion.


Mange is caused by external parasites, and is a contagious skin disease. The dog and cat species of mange mites are generally what is found.

The mites burrow under the surface of the skin, whcih cases localized hair loss especially around head and neck, but can appear anywhere on the body. It also causes serum to exude and form flakes or scabs, causing constant scratching.

In order to prevent your rabbits from getting mange, all dogs and cats should be kept away from the rabbitry. Be sure to isolate any infected animals, and treat with an animal dusting for external parasites or a mange medication.
